Lebanon Chapter: Lessons in Leadership from the Titanic by Raed Charafeddine
As a follow up to the successful hosting of the first Meet the Leader activity last August in Lebanon with the First Vice- Governor of Lebanon's Central Bank, Mr. Raed Charafeddine, MELA Lebanon chapter hosted a large leadership session with Mr. Charafeddine again in November of this same year. The second meeting with Mr. Charafeddine was this time not confined to MELA people only, but also to a larger pool of people interested in leadership sessions. Over 140 professionals coming from all walk of life, and many industries gathered at the École Supérieure des Affaires – ESA, in Beirut for a 3-hour interactive and engaging session on “Leadership Lessons from the Titanic”.
The event, attended by MELA Regional Program Director Samer Ebbini, was kicked off by a brief video on the MELA experience, followed by a small word from MELA Head of Lebanon Chapter, Elissar Hajj. After sharing a personal experience with MELA, Elissar briefly introduced the guest speaker before opening the floor for a very interesting discussion.
Mr. Charafeddine, who has been an advocate of MELA in Lebanon through convening in the past a group of 10 most influential heads of human resources in the country, and encouraging MELA's vision and activities, has given the attendees a personal insight on leadership, a talk he fluently runs in leading universities of the world such as Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Yale and others. During the session, Mr. Charafeddine shared his experience with his daughters on board of the legendary Titanic cruise, on the occasion of the ship’s Centennial Memorial back in 2012.
Central lessons of this catastrophe remain relevant until today. The presentation reflected on the Times of the Titanic, and what he learned from diverse failures in leadership that caused the sinking of the largest, fastest and most luxurious (and assumedly "unsinkable") ship of its time.
